Summer is Approaching

What a difference a year makes, at least with the weather. So far a beautiful spring, the weather has allowed great growing conditions for all commodities. The different sectors, flowers, nursery, sod, vegetables, potatoes and fruit are all optimistic that the economy and consumers are back in a buying mode.

Farm Bureau Happenings!

So far, from what I hear from flower growers, nursery and vegetable farmers, customers are coming in at a good rate and business is up about 20% or so at the retail level. That’s good news, encouraging. Farmers are eternal optimists that the next year is going to be better. Lord knows the industry needs some good news.

LI Farm Bureau faces Challenging times

It has been a challenge organizationally for Farm Bureau, not only legislatively, but internally as well. The frustrating thing for us staff people, as good as Farm Bureau is at performing our mission (to strengthen and protect our industry), it is never enough to satisfy some members. Long Island and New York Farm Bureaus are extremely respected and effective in thwarting bad public policy before it happens. Time and time again Farm Bureau is in there fighting bad legislative proposals on your behalf without anyone even realizing we “took care of it”.

Active Environmentalists

As the Executive Director of Long Island Farm Bureau, I must pick and choose our PR battles. However, last week’s letter to the editor on pesticides beckons an educational moment here. Most people have concerns on issues or perceptions where they don’t have direct control or knowledge. Such is the case with pesticides.

Aubertine toured a number of farm operations to discuss their operations, their concerns and the importance of agriculture to Long Island economy and citizens. The big 3 issues for us were Immigration/Farm Labor concerns, Increasing Damage from Wildlife, and Farm Profitability/General Economics.

Farmland Preservation Protects 15,000 acres - Halfway to Goal

Over the last two years, Long Island Farm Bureau has been working closely with Suffolk County, Peconic Land Trust and other interested parties to make careful improvements to Chapter 8 Laws of Suffolk County - the Farmland Preservation Program. The program has worked very well over the life of the program in preserving 15,000 acres of farmland between Suffolk County, the Towns and New York State.

Now it needs to be modified to work even better.
