Welcome to the Long Island Farm Bureau's Web site

We've designed these pages to help you understand more about LIFB, what we stand for, the services and resources we provide to our members, and to tell the wonderful story of Long Island agriculture.  These pages contain information about Long Island farming, growing, raising, catching … today … and the great legacy that we inherit (and protect!) as the latest generation in the 300-plus years of farming and fishing on this great Island.

"Farm Bureau" is a wonderful and unique American concept - Farm Bureau is a true grassroots, member-driven organization with a century's legacy in political activism. Farm bureaus are private, non-partisan not-for-profit agricultural membership and advocacy organizations known as "The Voice of Commercial Agriculture."  In Nassau and Suffolk counties, LIFB is the Voice of Long Island Agriculture.

Our mission is to fairly and aggressively represent and serve the best interests of our members through united action, using the strength of a grassroots organizational structure and relying on effective leadership to provide strong, networked and allied Farm Bureau organizations at the local, state and national organization levels. Our collective goal: to protect and strengthen the nation's agricultural industry.

That especially includes the agricultural industries of the Long Island region and of our great State of New York.

  •  Did you know that Suffolk County is the state's largest dollar producer of agricultural products?
  • And that agriculture is one of the major industry groups in the State of New York?

Long Island Farm Bureau Membership

There are two types of membership available:

  • Regular Members:  Those engaged in the business of producing agricultural products.
  • Associate Members:  Those who support our ideals and efforts and want to help preserve and protect our rural way of life.

Our Regular Members decide exactly what public policy issues the Bureau will address in its government relations and lobbying efforts.

Our Associate Members are frequently involved in activities directly related to the Regular Members' businesses - as landscapers, contractors, landscape designers, nursery operators, restaurant owners, professional service providers, equipment dealers, farm supply companies, food service organizations and citizens, homeowners interested in rural quality of life.We welcome homeowners and Long Island residents interested in helping to preserve our wonderful quality of life to Associate Membership.

Director Named to LI Power List
Minimize

We are proud to announce that Joe Gergela, LIFB's Executive Director, has been named to the 7th annual Long Island Press Power List of most influential Long Islanders.

The individuals named to the Power List range from top names in politics and business to community leaders.

Joseph Gergela
Long Island Farm Bureau Executive Director

With every farm that disappears from the Island, a piece of our shared history is lost forever.  As head of the Long Island Farm Bureau, there was a time that Joe Gergela would have been king of Long Island, but today this kingdom has dwindled as suburban sprawl has paved over the much of this historic place.  As a result, Gergela’s position is more important than ever. He makes his debut on the Power List this year because he has as many powerful ears in Washington as ears of corn on the Island. Just as comfortable cozying up to U.S. senators as he is with those who sow seeds on the fertile soil of LI, Gergela is the perfect blend of land advocate and power lobbyist.
