Agriculture in the Classroom

For Second Graders

Before We eat

Before We Eat: From Farm to Table By Pat Brisson and Illustrated by Mary Azarian

In celebration of New York agriculture, volunteers throughout the state will read a book with an agricultural theme to second graders. Students and teachers will also benefit from hands-on lessons and receive follow up activities. The book will be donated to the school or classroom library with a bookplate recognizing the donor and NY Agricultural Literacy Week. 2,000 books were donated last year while thousands of second graders participated in fun and educational activities.

If you know a 2nd Grade educator that wants to participate, please contact the AG Literacy Coordinator for your county - Nassau or Suffolk.

For Fourth Graders

As part of our commitment to teach students about their Long Island Farming heritage, this program includes a 15 minute video (free copy for each school) and a visit from a Long Island farmer. Each farmer volunteer will teach the students about their specific type of farming and share their farming history. Dates are scheduled for March 2018.

Email us if you would like to have a farmer visit your 4th grade classroom.

There is a wealth of information available to educators designed and directed to students of all ages. There are also programs to support the educators.
